Review these essential safety and technical guidelines to
keep your Kenda tires in safe working condition:
Air Pressure & Inflation
- Check Regularly: Verify pressure monthly when tires are cold using an accurate gauge.
- Avoid Under-inflation: Low pressure causes excessive sidewall flexing, internal heat build-up, and dangerous, premature tire failure.
- Avoid Over-inflation: High pressure makes the tire highly susceptible to impact damage and harsh road hazards. Never exceed the maximum inflation pressure stamped on the tire's sidewall.
Load & Speed
- Never Overload: Exceeding the maximum load capacity molded into the tire sidewall builds up excessive heat and increases the risk of blowouts.
- Speed Ratings: Driving at excessive speeds—or beyond the tire’s designated speed rating—leads to dangerous heat accumulation and potential tread separation.
Damage & Wear
- Inspect for Damage: Avoid chuckholes, glass, curbs, and rocks. Continued use of a tire with internal damage can lead to sudden failure.
- Tread Wear: Tires with less than 1.6 mm of tread depth are considered worn out and should be replaced. Use the built-in treadwear indicators to gauge when replacement is necessary.
- Liquid Sealants: Kenda generally advises against the use of liquid puncture sealants (unless specifically rated for tubeless bicycle tires) as they may cause chemical corrosion and void warranties.
Mounting & Replacement
- Professional Installation: Kenda highly recommends having tires mounted by trained professionals, as improper bead seating or mismatched wheel sizes can cause explosive failures.
- Matching Tires: Never mix different tire types (such as radials and bias-ply) on the same vehicle, as this causes severe instability and unpredictable handling.
Run-In period
New tires should not be subjected to maximum power or extreme cornering until the new tire has traveled at least 100 km. This will allow the rider to get used to the feel of the tires and their performance characteristics. Remember a new tire has very different performance characteristics than a used tire of the same make/model.
Tire repair and modification
Kenda does not recommend repairing tires. Kenda also does not condone the use of liquid sealants as a tire repair device. Kenda does not recommend ANY type of tire modification. Instead, faulty tires should be replaced with comparable new tires. For detailed information specific to your vehicle or equipment, check the specific warranties. If your tire has suffered severe damage or is heavily aged, consult a professional Kenda dealer for a replacement.
Trailer Safety Tips
Make a pre-departure safety checklist.
Check and correct tire pressure on the tow vehicle and trailer, including the spare tire, and make sure the wheel lug nuts/bolts on both vehicles are tightened to the correct torque. Do a visual inspection for irregularities or foreign debris.
It’s all about balance.
Load your trailer properly – weight distribution matters, a tail-heavy trailer could cause instability. At least 60% of your load should be toward the front half of the trailer.
More than arm’s distance.
Knowing the proper stopping distance is key when driving. Additional weight due to your trailer and load can extend that distance as well as road surface conditions. Prolonged use of brakes can cause overheating and loss of brake effectiveness. Giving yourself ample space to respond should help prevent frequent and/or hard braking
Did you check the weather?
Remember to constantly consult your weather app to anticipate any changes. Understanding your trailer tires and their traction in rain or snow should guide you as you head out into inclement conditions.
Sway the right way.
Gas off, brake off, steer straight, and wait. DO NOT attempt to control sway by turning the steering wheel as it will only make the issue worse. If you have a brake controller, gently apply only the trailer brakes.
